How to choose a rugged laptop battery
Read the cycle count first
Before ordering a replacement, check the current battery's health. On Toughbook, open Panasonic PC Information Viewer → Battery; on Getac, open the Getac Utility. Both report cycle count and current full-charge capacity. Anything below 70% of the design capacity, or above ~500 cycles, is replacement territory.
Match the part number
OEM part numbers encode chemistry, voltage, and form factor. A Toughbook 55 standard cell (CF-VZSU1AW) is not interchangeable with the high-capacity cell (CF-VZSU1BW) without a different bay configuration. Always match by part number, not by laptop model alone.
Verify the firmware handshake
Rugged laptops protect their charge circuit with a chemistry-and-voltage handshake. A cell that doesn't respond correctly reports 0% or refuses to charge — a common failure mode of cheap third-party batteries. Every Axis battery is tested against the host device's firmware before we list it.
Standard vs high-capacity
If your role involves a full shift away from a dock, a high-capacity or extended cell typically adds 8–10 hours of runtime. On modular devices (Toughbook 55, Getac S410), the extended cell occupies the same expansion bay as the standard cell, so swapping is mechanical, not invasive.

Most Toughbook and Getac batteries are rated for 500–800 cycles before capacity falls below 80% of original. In daily field use that's typically 2–3 years.
Can I use a third-party battery without voiding warranty?+
On a Rugged Books refurbished device, yes — Axis batteries are part of our supported parts list. On a brand-new OEM device under original warranty, check the manufacturer's policy.
Is hot-swap safe with extended batteries?+
Yes on modular devices like the Toughbook 55, as long as the extended cell respects the firmware hot-swap profile. Our high-capacity cells are tested for this.
Why won't my new battery charge?+
Most often it's a missing firmware handshake — generic cells skip the chemistry/voltage identification step the device requires. Use a verified replacement matched to the OEM part number.
