What MIL-STD-810 actually means
MIL-STD-810 is a US Department of Defense test methodology, not a certification. A device or accessory "tested to" a method (516 for drop, 506 for rain, 510 for dust) means the manufacturer ran the test. Fully rugged laptops like the Getac F110 or B300 already pass the full test set on the chassis itself. Cases extend that coverage to the points the chassis doesn't protect — usually port flaps, hinge corners, and the screen bezel.
Chassis fit matters more than rating
A 4-foot-drop-rated case that doesn't fit your Toughbook properly will fail in the real world, because users will leave it off rather than re-seat it after every dock-in. The case has to be cut to the exact chassis: ports open, hinge clearance correct, hand-strap mounts passing through, docking connector accessible.
Vehicle dock compatibility
If the device lives in a vehicle dock, the case has to be vehicle-dock-compatible — meaning you can drop the device into the OEM dock without removing the case. Most generic cases fail this test by a few millimeters. Every Axis case is verified against the host device's OEM vehicle dock.

Do I need a case if my laptop is already MIL-STD rated?+
Often, yes — for ports, hinge corners, and screen edges, which take the daily wear even if the chassis survives the drop. The case is reinforcement around the highest-failure areas.
Will a third-party case block the docking connector?+
It will if it isn't cut to the chassis. Every Axis case is verified against the OEM vehicle dock for the host device — install and remove with the case on.
Are silicone-only cases enough?+
Silicone gives bumper protection but no rigidity. For laptops carried through industrial or vehicle environments, a TPU + polycarbonate shell handles drops better.
